Yesterday’s NY Times had an excellent article about the the state of LED lighting. The article cites an industrial installation which chose LEDs for general illumination and the owners calculate that despite the higher cost, the investment will pay back in a couple of years. Some other key points…

All the major lighting companies are rapidly retooling to switch to LEDs.

Philips is going to launch its first LED bulb, the Ledino, meant to replace regular light bulbs. But the $107 (actually 69 Euros according to the press release, so if they manufacture them in the US maybe they will be more affordable) price tag will make it a non-starter, and a Philips VP admits it. Why can’t Philips produce this bulb at least as cheaply as Section9 Technology’s Greenlux bulb?

Philips is also cutting research into improving compact fluorescent bulbs and putting all the money in LEDs.

LEDs dominated the lighting industry trade show, Lightfair, this past May.
